Egyptian
dance was handed down within the family from generation
to generation - until social and economic changes
threatened its very existence. Today, Suraya Hilal
has brought the rich dance tradition of Egypt back
to life. She has analysed, reconstructed, clarified
and developed the dance in all its aspects: the fiery
dance of the Egyptian gypsies, the earthy dance of
the Fellahin, the sophisticated dance of the royal
courts, and the urbanized folk dance. All these forms
have now been re-established in her work and can take
their place as a part of the world's cultural heritage.
